 Effect of LMW Chitosan on reproduction performance of sows and growth performance of suckling pigs

Experimental group Ⅰ: 50 g/t LMW Chitosan
Experimental group Ⅱ: 100 g/t LMW Chitosan

Through observing the defecation of the sows in the perinatal period, it was found that there was constipation phenomenon in the control group. And it can be seen from Table 1 that the dietary LMW Chitosan in late-gestation sows can soften and increase the moisture content of feces.

As shown in Table 2, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) of backfat thickness of sows between experimental groups and control group, neither during 110-day of gestation, nor when piglets were 21 days old. While the loss of backfat thickness in experimental groups was slightly lower than that of control group.

As shown in Table 3, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) of total piglets born per litter between experimental groups and control group. The number of healthy piglets per litter in experimental group Ⅰ was the most, experimental group Ⅱ was the second, and the least was control group. The dietary LMW Chitosan significantly shortened (P<0.01) the birth process of sows. The total and daily feed intake of sows during lactation in experimental group Ⅰ and Ⅱ were higher (P<0.05) than those of control group. That is to say, the dietary LMW Chitosan significantly increased (P<0.05) the feed intake of sows. When compared with control group, the 0-day, 7-day, and 14-day litter weights were higher (P<0.05) in experimental group Ⅰ, and the milk yield of sows during lactation was higher (P<0.05) in experimental group Ⅱ.

As shown in Table 4, the diarrhea rate of experimental group Ⅱ was significantly lower than the control group and experimental group Ⅰ. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between control group and experimental group Ⅰ. When compared with control group, the 21-day weight per piglet and 0-7 daily gain were higher (P<0.05) in experimental group Ⅰ, and the 21-day weight per piglet, 14-21 daily gain, and 0-21 daily gain were higher (P<0.05) in experimental group Ⅱ.

As shown in Table 5, the activity of serum LDH and concentration of serum TG of suckling pigs in experimental group Ⅰ, the activity of α-AMY and LDH, and concentration of LDL in experimental group Ⅱ were significantly lower (P<0.05) than the control group.
